When a free preview becomes a bill: what Cloudflare's AI Search launch shows SaaS buyers

On October 1, 2026, Cloudflare announced that AI Search, its managed index-and-retrieval service for developers, is generally available. It is a concrete example of something SaaS buyers meet sooner or later: preview pricing turns into a metered bill on a set date.

What Cloudflare announced

According to Cloudflare's post, AI Search combines Workers AI, Vectorize, R2, and Browser Run into a managed pipeline. With general availability it adds native image embeddings, optical character recognition (OCR) for PDFs, and support for text files and PDFs up to 10 MiB, up from 4 MiB.

The pricing is the part that matters for buyers. Cloudflare says it announced preview pricing during its August 2026 Agents Week, and that billing starts on November 1, 2026. It says it will email a reminder first, and that a free tier continues on all Workers plans.

How the pricing is built

Cloudflare says you pay for three things: content ingested, data stored, and queries run. It says parsing, chunking, embedding with Workers AI models, keyword indexing, and reranking are included, with no instance hours, capacity units, or monthly minimums. The listed rates:

Cloudflare adds that OCR is billed as image processing ingestion tokens, and that embedding and reranking are free with select Workers AI models while third-party models are billed separately. It also made one change from the preview: the free allotment is now 1,000 semantic queries and 1,000 full-text queries, instead of a shared pool of 2,000.

What to take from it

We have not used AI Search, and this is not a review of it. But the pattern is a useful checklist for any tool you are trying:

  1. Find the date. Preview pricing can end. Put the billing date in your calendar the day you start.
  2. Know what is metered. Here it is ingestion, storage, and queries. For other tools it may be seats, contacts, or credits.
  3. Read the free allotment, not just the rates. The free amounts decide whether a small project costs anything at all.
  4. Expect terms to shift between preview and launch. The query allotment changed between the two. Re-read the pricing page when a tool leaves preview.
  5. Estimate before you build. Cloudflare says AI Search pricing is designed so you can estimate a bill before indexing a single file. Do that arithmetic with your own volumes first.

None of this says AI Search is right or wrong for you. It does show what a clear pricing announcement looks like: a date, a list of what is metered, and the free amounts. If a tool you are evaluating cannot give you those three things, learn that before you build on it.
