New launch, not tested hands-on. “Mintlify Autopilot” (“An always-on agent that keeps your docs up to date”) was in the top 11 of the Product Hunt daily leaderboard for October 20, 2026 when we checked (about 8:20 AM ET), and Mintlify announced it on its blog the same day. Mintlify itself is an established docs platform (it says 20,000+ companies use it); Autopilot is the new part and is in beta on Pro and Enterprise. Everything below comes from mintlify.com.

No affiliate program found. We found no affiliate or referral program on mintlify.com (nothing in the footer; /affiliates and /partners return 404, checked October 20, 2026). Every link on this page goes to the official site and earns us nothing.

Summary

Quick verdict: a polished, popular choice for API and product docs, with a genuinely useful free plan. The catch is the jump: everything AI (assistant, writing agent, automations and the new Autopilot) sits on Pro at $450 a month billed yearly ($540 monthly), and AI actions draw from a credit allowance.

  • Hosted docs site with custom domain, web editor, Git sync, search, API playground, authentication and an MCP server, free on Starter.
  • Pro adds the AI assistant, writing agent, automations, analytics, preview deployments and unlimited editor seats.
  • Prices: Starter $0; Pro $450 a month billed annually or $540 billed monthly; Enterprise custom.
  • Pro includes 10,000 AI credits a month; overages are $0.01 a credit. An assistant answer is 25 credits; an automation or Autopilot update is 250 credits.
  • Autopilot (new, beta): connects to your repos (and on Pro, Slack), drafts doc updates when code changes and opens a pull request for review. Runs that find nothing cost nothing.
  • New accounts get a 14-day Pro trial with 5,000 credits and no card; startups and open-source projects can apply for discounts.

  • AI credit prices: an Assistant answer costs 25 credits (free when it can’t answer); an automation or Autopilot update costs 250 credits (free when nothing needs updating). The writing agent is included on Pro at no charge.
  • Overages are $0.01 per credit, with discounted credit packs; you can set a hard limit or turn overages off so AI features pause at the quota.
  • Free trial: 14 days of Pro with 5,000 credits, no card; it ends after 14 days or when the credits run out. Your docs can stay live on Starter.
  • Startup Program: venture-backed startups under 2 years old that raised under $2M (and YC alumni) can apply for 50% off Pro for 12 months; the current YC batch gets 12 months free.
  • OSS Program: qualifying non-commercial open-source projects can apply for Pro free.
  • On Pro, Autopilot connects GitHub and Slack; the full range of sources is Enterprise-only.

Features

From mintlify.com, its pricing page and the Autopilot announcement, October 20, 2026. Described, not tested.

  • Docs platform: hosted site (live at a mintlify.site address or your own domain), web editor, Git sync, search, API playground and built-in components.
  • Built for AI agents too: MCP server on every plan; agent analytics, WebMCP and agent optimizations listed on paid plans; Mintlify says 78% of its traffic now comes from agents.
  • AI assistant: answers readers’ questions from your docs (25 credits per answer, free when it can’t answer).
  • Writing agent: drafts and edits in the editor and in Slack, included on Pro.
  • Autopilot (new, beta): reads code merges, repeated support questions and Slack threads, drafts the doc change and opens a pull request; nothing ships until a person merges it. It learns your tone from the PRs you review.
  • Automations: set-up workflows such as translations (250 credits per update).
  • Collaboration: 5 editor seats free, unlimited on Pro; preview deployments, grammar checks and narration on Pro.
  • Enterprise: SSO/SCIM, role-based permissions, audit logs, custom SLAs, self-hosting and EU hosting.

Who it’s for

  • API and developer-tool companies that need good-looking reference docs and an API playground fast.
  • Startups that can live on the free Starter plan now and apply for the 50% Startup Program later.
  • Teams whose docs fall behind their code, who want Autopilot to open the update PRs.
  • Not for you if you only need a simple help center (cheaper tools exist), or if $450 a month is too much for AI on your docs.

The catch

Free docs are generous, but every AI feature sits behind a $450-a-month Pro plan.

  • There is no plan between $0 and $450 a month (billed yearly); monthly Pro is $540.
  • AI actions spend credits; heavy use of the assistant or Autopilot can mean overage at $0.01 a credit.
  • Autopilot is in beta, and on Pro it only connects GitHub and Slack.
  • Advanced insights, multi-repo, white labeling, SSO and self-hosting are Enterprise-only.
  • Usage numbers and customer results are Mintlify’s own claims.
  • We have not tested the editor, the assistant or Autopilot’s pull requests.

Verdict

  • Starter (free): an easy yes for a new product’s docs; custom domain and 5 editors included.
  • Pro ($450 yearly / $540 monthly): worth it once docs drive revenue or support load and you will use the assistant and Autopilot.
  • Startup Program: apply before paying full price if you qualify (50% off for 12 months).
  • Enterprise: for SSO, compliance, self-hosting or multi-repo setups.

Worth trying if: you run a developer product and want polished docs today, with an agent that keeps them in sync with your code.

Skip it if: you only need a basic FAQ or help center, or the jump from free to $450 a month is not justified for you.

Mintlify FAQ

How much does Mintlify cost?

As of October 20, 2026, Mintlify Starter is free (5 editor seats). Pro costs $450 a month billed annually or $540 billed monthly and includes 10,000 AI credits a month ($0.01 per extra credit). Enterprise is custom. Check mintlify.com/pricing for today’s price.

What is the main downside of Mintlify?

All AI features, including the new Autopilot agent, need the Pro plan at $450 a month or more, and AI actions use credits, so costs can rise with heavy use.
